The Three Sisters Nature Reserve is at Bryn near Ashton-in-Makerfield.
The reserve was developed in the late 1960s on the site of the Garswood Hall Colliery which closed in 1952.
"Three Sisters" is a reference to the colliery's three spoil tips (also known as the "Wigan Alps")
which remained after its closure.
The pit heaps were subsequently levelled, and the site was landscaped
and developed as a multifunctional amenity cared for by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust
and the "Friends of Three Sisters".
