Lichens are strange. They are really two plants in one - a fungus and a plant of the algae group.

Lichens are an indicator of clean air, so it is pleasing to see so much of it on trees around the flash. Especially when it is considered that, until it closed in 1992, Bickershaw Colliery and all its associated industrial pollution overlooked the flash.
