In 1812 work began on a flight of locks to lift the Leeds and Liverpool Canal from Wigan up to Kirkless and connect it to the terminus of the Lancaster Canal at “Top Lock”.

There are 23 locks on the Wigan flight. They raise the canal about 60 metres (200 ft) over a distance of about three miles.

I recommend that you park your car at Wigan Pier then walk up the canal to Kirkless Hall Inn. Have a meal and a glass of cider before enjoying the easier walk back.
