These pictures were taken at various times over the last few years. They show that Wigan is built on a hill in a valley. The River Douglas loops around the town forming a defensive barrier which encouraged early settlement.
Wigan Church, which stands near the centre of the town, can be seen on each picture, although it is not always easy to spot.
